In 1835 when the Foundation Chair in Anatomy and Physiology was estab lished, the Foundation Professor, Dr J L Drummond, had the entire responsibility for all pre -clinical studies. For this task, we today employ seven-professors, 25 readers, senior lecturers and lecturers, four research officers, two research assistants, 39 technicians, six clerical officers and one computer programmer, 84 people in all. I would like to think that the teaching today is 84 times better than in 1835 but I suspect that this may not be so. THE BELFAST MEDICAL SCHOOL
